Father\u2019s Day brings many memories. I grew up in a home with parents that<\/div>\n
had both attended Bible college and were very involved in the church.<\/div>\n
As a result, we were in church every time the doors were open for a service.<\/div>\n
We learned to sleep under pews when revival services went long<\/div>\n
\u00a0and to draw very quietly in church.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\"Dad<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As we grew into teenagers, we were allowed to sit with our friends in the \u201cyouth\u201d section<\/div>\n
\u00a0of the sanctuary as long as it was in the front half of the church.<\/div>\n
Dad even made us physically count the pews. I realize now. as a parent, that<\/div>\n
the rationale was they would sit farther back<\/div>\n
than we did so they could monitor our \u201cattention to the service\u201d and<\/div>\n
they didn’t like sitting in the back of the church.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We didn’t need cell phones and text messages to know when we had crossed the line either.<\/div>\n
The first warning was Mom would have a slight coughing fit.<\/div>\n
The second was Dad would put his hand under the pew and snap his fingers,<\/div>\n
and you could hear it no matter where you were in the sanctuary.<\/div>\n
If the fingers got snapped you knew to straighten up, because if there was third time<\/div>\n
Dad was sending the usher to get you and you had to sit with them for the rest of service.<\/div>\n
Oh horrors! Would there have been anything more embarrassing as a teen<\/div>\n
\u00a0than having to sit with your parents in church?!?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I loved hearing evangelists and missionaries speak. They had amazing stories<\/div>\n
\u00a0of God\u2019s saving and healing power. Often, their own stories were of rebellion<\/div>\n
\u00a0and turning away from God but eventual surrender to God\u2019s saving power.<\/div>\n
When God saved them, their lives became magnets that drew people to him.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I remember as a teen talking to my dad one week after one of those services.<\/div>\n
I shared that I doubted I would have much influence for God<\/div>\n
because I had accepted Christ as my Savior when I was a young child<\/div>\n
\u00a0and had lived a \u201cChristian\u201d life ever since. (Don\u2019t get me wrong,<\/div>\n
I was not a perfect child by any stretch of the imagination<\/div>\n
but neither was I one to rock the boat with open rebellion.)<\/div>\n
I didn\u2019t have a phenomenal testimony of God\u2019s saving power<\/div>\n
or a story of amazing physical healing that saved me from death.<\/div>\n
I felt like I had nothing to offer.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My dad spoke some very wise words to me that day.<\/div>\n
He asked me if I didn\u2019t think that God\u2019s power to keep someone from going astray<\/div>\n
\u00a0wasn\u2019t just as miraculous as bringing someone back after they strayed.<\/div>\n
He shared his deep conviction that God\u2019s keeping power was<\/div>\n
just as important as his saving power.<\/div>\n
He pointed to Bible characters such as Joseph and Esther of the Old Testament,<\/div>\n
how they did their best to serve God all of their lives<\/div>\n
\u00a0and God used them to save their nation.<\/div>\n
They didn\u2019t have testimonies of being saved from lives of deep sin<\/div>\n
\u2014theirs were testimonies of being kept by God for his specific purpose.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
That day gave me a new appreciation for the power of God in my life.<\/div>\n
I am so thankful that I didn\u2019t have to rebel and become a \u201cwild child\u201d<\/div>\n
to have a testimony of God\u2019s power. But I am thankful that he saves those who do rebel<\/div>\n
\u00a0and uses their lives for his purposes as I had a \u201cwild child\u201d brother that turned back to God<\/div>\n
\u00a0and has influenced many lives as an educator.<\/div>\n

This is the fifth Father\u2019s Day since Dad has been gone.<\/div>\n
I miss my dad but know that we will be reunited in heaven some day.<\/div>\n
His words and prayers impacted not just my life but the lives of many.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I\u2019m thankful that Dad taught me God\u2019s power could save and keep,<\/div>\n
and that power has allowed Him to prepare me to share my heart for home!<\/div>\n
