Most who know my family would say that calling us \u201ccompetitive\u201d<\/div>\n
is a bit of an understatement. Growing up, my boys made almost everything into a competition.<\/div>\n
They still can be that way\u2014especially with each other.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Last year, my husband decided to use that competitive spirit to get them all home<\/div>\n
\u00a0for Father\u2019s Day. So he announced the first annual burger cooking contest.<\/div>\n
It almost worked. One son was unable to come home<\/div>\n
but since his dad was joining him the next day for a fishing trip, we \u201celected\u201d him \u201cThe Judge.\u201d<\/div>\n
We made a slider version of our burgers, placed them in a specially marked lunch sacks<\/div>\n
\u00a0with all of the special condiments and instructions for assembly and sent them with my husband.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Without knowing who made what burger, that son declared his twin the \u201cwinner.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The creative juices started flowing early for this year\u2019s competition,<\/div>\n
and everyone made it home. A lot of thought and creative cooking went into this year\u2019s burgers. There was homemade mozzarella cheese<\/a>, roasted blackberry barbecue sauce, pineapple-avocado guacamole, Dr. Pepper bacon, fresh cucumber tzatziki, and unique ingredients like duck fat.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Everyone was busy mixing, chopping, tasting, and cooking. No one was secretive<\/div>\n
about what they were cooking but all were pretty confident that they would win.<\/div>\n
When my kitchen looked like it qualified for an episode of \u201cRestaurant Makeover\u201d,<\/div>\n
it was time for the judging.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
My son\u2019s friend graciously agreed to judge our contest so that we all could participate.<\/div>\n
He didn\u2019t have an easy job. It played out like an odd version of \u201cChopped\u201d with each one<\/div>\n
presenting their burger and describing it\u2019s creation and attributes before he tasted each one.<\/div>\n
He made great comments like:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWow, I have nothing to compare that to!\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cHe knows what a man wants in his burger.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThat looks too nice to cut and eat.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After much laughter and fun, the winner was announced.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For the second year in a row, Jordan had won!<\/div>\n
There was much boasting on his part, and<\/div>\n
justification on the rest of our parts for why we didn’t win.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Overall, we had a wonderful Father\u2019s Day. We gathered after attending our<\/div>\n
respective church services and thoroughly enjoyed our rare family time together.<\/div>\n
Not all the friends that we invited to join us were able to<\/div>\n
but we know they will be part of a gathering in our home at another time.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

I\u2019m thankful that my family enjoys spending time together<\/div>\n
and when it is all over, we still love and like each other.<\/div>\n
Their willingness to invite others to join us for this family day<\/div>\n
shows me that I have done something right as wife and mom<\/div>\n
because they all share my heart for home!<\/div>\n
