My hubby isn’t real big on gifts but he loves having the family together. He also knows the competitive hearts of our sons. The result? Our annual Father’s Day Burger Contest was created. We celebrated Father’s Day early this year since our youngest son is in Costa Rica on a mission trip over the holiday.
You would have thought this was a high stakes competition instead of just for family bragging rights! There were no plain cheeseburgers in this bunch. There were amazing creations like The Count (as in Monte Cristo) burger with French toast crust and strawberry-jalapeno jam, the Bleu & Orange burger with an orange zest spice mix in the burger and creamy bleu cheese, the Salmon Croquette burger with a corn-meal crusted salmon patty with mango chutney, and the Chicken-Fried Steak burger on Texas toast with a fried egg and sausage gravy. There were special condiments like Parmesan crisps, ketchup leather, and guacamole spread. We were taking this competition very seriously!
Even our adorable oldest granddaughter got into the spirit of the day with her Pretty Princess Burger that was dressed with just “salad” and ketchup on a slider bun.
Our judges this year were our sweet niece and her hubby. I’m not sure they knew quite what they were getting themselves in to when they volunteered. They were busy taking notes and tallying scores after they tasted each burger.
And the winner was….
…my hubby! His Grandpa’s Popper Burger with guacamole spread, cilantro & lime cream cheese, roasted poblano peppers, and homemade pico de gallo was yummy! It was only right that he finally won since he created the contest.
We are currently assembling all of the recipes from all of our annual burger contests and the traditional sides we serve into a free recipe booklet. Be watching for your opportunity to capture all of these wonderful tastes!
Of course, even though he won, my hubby would tell you that the best part of the day was that we were all together! We enjoyed celebrating Father’s Day and an engagement! Love our family as it grows to include amazing young women!
